Notes from a Portfolio review with Paolo Rivera

A few weeks ago we had a master class with the great comic book artist Paolo Rivera. Paolo was awesome, and very nice and helpful, here are my notes from the portfolio review of the general stuff he said that can be helpful to anybody, once again this are just my notes, paraphrasing his words and probably inaccurate  hehe.

  • If you want to master anatomy sculpt!

  • In your compositions, generally put smaller objects in front and bigger objects in the Background.

  • Whenever you can, get real physical references or 3D models at least.

  • To be good at simplifying one must think like a cartoonist and a painter. One must signify form.

  • Time yourself while working and then decide how to charge.
  • Know your average rate, keep track of your working hours, you can't control what jobs you take if you don't know yourself.

  • Don't draw everything, let the brain fill the gaps.

  • Style come from trick you learn to simplify.

  • Draftsmanship is really something the big Companies are interested

  • Painting doesn't improve drawing, drawing does.

  • When dealing with complex objects, first think of silhouette and then suggest the detail

  • Stories are moments of contrast, contrast in storytelling and contrast in drawing.

  • The important thing is to get your ideas across

  • The same object repeated 3 times gives the illusion of a pattern.

  • For depth:
  • Overlap > Geometric Perspective > Aerial Perspective

Be sure to check his blog and really awesome stuff! He goes in more deeply on some of the stuff of this blog and a lot more, and he also posts his art process and a lot of sweet stuff.
